Daesh meaning in english

The fact that these leaders are using the term now — following the deadly Paris attacks that left at least people dead and which ISIS claimed responsibility for — is no coincidence. ISIS has claimed it was behind a number of international tragedies in recent months, so it's important to know about the terrorist organization that the United States, France, and other countries are facing.

ISIS' alternate name, "Daesh," comes from an Arabic acronym for the group's full title and is considered an insult, so world leaders using the term is a way of fighting back. Alice Guthrie, an Arabic translator, explains at the Free Word Centre's website that the term "Daesh" is "a transliteration of the Arabic acronym formed of the same words that make up 'ISIS' in English: 'Islamic State in Iraq and Syria,' or 'al-dowla al-islaamiyya fii-il-i'raaq wa-ash-shaam.

As Guthrie explains, using the term "Daesh," instead of "the Islamic State" or "ISIS," is refusing to acknowledge the organization as a state, which is how the group wants to be addressed. NBC News also notes that calling the organization the "Islamic State," rather than "Daesh," inherently "offers legitimacy to the group. Of course, ISIS' dissatisfaction with "Daesh" is exactly why world leaders and media organizations are using the term.

The Associated Press notes that Arab governments have used the term for a while, but it's catching on among leaders including President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry, too.

And when French President Francois Hollande held a press conference Saturday after the Paris massacre this weekend, he used the term, too, saying France "will be unforgiving with the barbarians from Daesh. By referring to ISIS as "Daesh" rather than as the "Islamic State," world leaders are taking a stand against terrorist propaganda and calling the group out for what it really is.

It's a small change, but using the term "Daesh" will show ISIS that the United States, France, and other countries aren't afraid to fight back against the group's attacks. To join Obama, Kerry, and Hollande in the fight against the group's attacks and propaganda, refer to it as "Daesh" instead of as ISIS — there's no reason to give the terrorist organization any respect or acknowledgement of its so-called statehood.

By Meghan DeMaria. The term has already become official terminology in Russia and France, where it was adopted as far back as Septemberand has a major advantage in that IS fighters and leaders hate it. The word is an Arabic acronym of al-Dawla al-Islamiya fi Iraq wa ash-Sham — meaning the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams — but Daesh when spoken sounds similar to the Arabic words for "the sowers of discord" Dahes or "one who crushes underfoot" Daes.

Due to Arabic wordplay, it could also be an insult and IS threatened "to cut the tongue of anyone who publicly used the acronym Daesh, instead of referring to the group by its full name", the Associated Press wrote in September Muslims have always preferred to use the term Daesh rather than Islamic State, given that, they argue, the territory the terrorist group controls in Iraq and Syria is neither Islamic nor a state.

Many object to the term Islamic State because "the word 'state' implies a system of administration and governance ", said David L Phillips, director of the Peace-Building and Rights Program at Columbia University. It is argued that Daesh has outgrown the titles Isis or Isil Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant — Levant being the English term for Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian Territoriessince it began its low-level insurgency in the deserts of eastern Syria and ploughed into Mosul in the summer of It is not the first time that a Conservative has pushed for the adoption of the term Daesh.

In July, Rehman Chishti, the MP for Gillingham and Rainham, launched a campaign to cease calling IS 'Islamic' State in order to uncouple the group from its false association with Islam and help challenge its legitimacy.

Islamic State: This is the English version of what the terror group calls itself. It also claims to be a caliphate, which is a state ruled by a caliph, which is Arabic for "successor", meaning successor to the Islamic Prophet Muhammad. The last generally acknowledged Muslim caliphate was the Ottoman Empire, which ended in Many governments and media refuse to use this name because it gives the group legitimacy as a state and a representative of Islam.

Isis : The militant group, which began as the Iraqi branch of al Qaeda during the US occupation, gained this name after it invaded Syria in The Levant is a geographical term that refers to the eastern shore of the Mediterranean — Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Israel and Jordan. It is the term the US government uses since the "Levant" is apparently a better translation for al-Sham, the Arabic name for the region.

Why Isis hates being called Daesh: What's the correct name for the world's most dangerous terrorists? The name of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant has been subject of debate and controversy since The literal translation of their previous name resulted in confusion, resulting in both ISIS and ISILtwo acronyms based on different literal translations of the name into English. Apart from these, an Arabic-derived acronym, Daesh or Da'ish gained traction well beyond Arabic-speaking parts of the world.

Finally, the group's current name caused controversy due to its English translation as Islamic State IS and as a result, both the previous acronyms are still widely used, or a qualifier is often added to the IS name, such as "self-styled Islamic State".

Originating in Iraq, the group underwent various previous name changesand since had been known as Islamic State of Iraq ISIa name which had failed to gain any traction, as the group had failed to gain or hold any significant territory as ISI, and thus widespread confusion over what to call them was largely absent.

According to the BBC, since neither "Levant", nor "Syria", reflect the group's likely meaning of the word al-Sham in Arabic, "various experts have therefore said that the word al-Sham should not be translated" when rendering the long form name.

In contrast to the difficulties in translation of the group's former name, according to The Guardian the group's name "near enough" literally translates to "Islamic State", however there is still a remaining difficulty since this fails to capture the true Arabic connotations, which are closer to a religious concept of a united Islamic community ummah under Sharia lawas opposed to western concept of a bureaucratic state apparatus.

Reflecting the desire to build a caliphate, the group also refers to itself as "al-Dawla", meaning simply "the State". According to Associate Press reporting the words of residents of Mosul in Iraq who were speaking on condition of anonymity, the group itself wishes to be referred by its full name only, Islamic State, considering the acronym Daesh to be disrespectful, going so far as to threaten to cut the tongue out of anyone who used it in public.

Terrythe Arab coalition partners believed strongly that the US should avoid referring to the enemy as ISIL and instead use Daesh, to avoid giving legitimacy to the group's aims.

This has subsequently changed after the group's name change to IS, with media and politicians now using it widely, with the BBC speculating this was either "despite or perhaps as a direct consequence of the irritation it causes the group". The group's adoption of the name Islamic State led to controversy due to the inference that it represented the Islamic faith or was a sovereign stateleading to outlets choosing to retain the acronyms ISIS or ISIL, or using qualifiers on the new name.

Governments of the Arab states adopted Daesh initially, and have continued to use it rather than IS. The Israeli government approach has been the same as Arab states. This was to disassociate the group from the al-Nusrah Front ANFas a result of the rift between the two groups. That is why Canada has announced a number of measures designed to combat ISIL's brutality and help victims of this barbaric terrorist group.

Several newspapers published by Metro International such as the Toronto edition sourced from the Toronto Star uses "Daesh". Many newspapers, such as The Age [26] use the expression "so-called Islamic State". Some media commentators have suggested that the debate over what to call the group was of little importance when compared to the need to actually stop them.

Rod Liddle has argued that avoiding the group's proper name goes against journalistic tradition, and indeed avoiding their use of the term "Islamic" is counter-productive considering many believe the right strategy to defeat them is to call on the help of Muslim communities. Writing for The Washington PostAmanda Bennett cast the debate as less about the meaning of words, but what they convey, contrasting politician's wish to have the group seen in a negative light, with the tradition in journalistic and academic circles to use organisations own preferred names, with explanation if there is a confusion or conflict with other meanings.

Writing in The Independentassistant secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, Miqdaad Versiargued that daesh is preferable to allowing the group to be able to use its preferred name, pointing out there were various inconsistencies in the BBC's and other outlets choice not to translate the names of other groups, and pointing out that Boko Haram is also an unofficial pejorative name.

On the issue of journalistic tradition of using recognisable names, Stephen Pritchard of The Guardian relayed the failure of their paper to get it right when they initially used "The Brotherhood", the rough English translation to refer to the little known Al-Qaeda group in the wake of the September 11 attacksbefore quickly dropping it as the Arabic name gained traction, despite it being their chosen brand.
